Video Poker Strategy
While discussing all of the tiny nuances of video poker could take a lifetime we can go over some of the main ideas to get you on to the right track towards video poker mastery. If you are completely new to video poker you may be interested in reading a little bit more about learning how to play video poker first.
The exact best strategy for any given video poker game will be completely dependent on the payout table for that game uses. Some are more generous than others. But the main ideas and concepts behind the decisions you should be making will remain constant throughout regardless of the payout table on the game you are playing.
The main idea behind good video poker strategy can be summed up very simply: just go for it. What I mean by that is that you should usually take a risk to try and make an extremely good hand like a straight flush or a Royal Flush. But you have to be careful with this risk as you don’t want to be too much.
Let’s take a look at a few examples.
Say you are initially dealt a hand that looks something like this: 3, 10, J, Q, A all of hearts. As you can see that we already have a flush which is obviously a good hand and were going to win some coins. But we also have for cards towards a Royal Flush which is a significantly better hand than just a normal flush.
As results the amount we could potentially win if we make a Royal Flush is huge. So while it may be tempting to keep the flash that you already have and not discard any cards and just lock in the small win that you’re guaranteed already it is far better long-term to discard that’s 3 in the hopes of getting the king of Hearts.
Another example to illustrate the flip side of this would be a hand that looks something like this: 9, 10, J, Q, K all spades. So here we have a straight flush already but again we also have for cards towards a Royal Flush.
But in this case it would be silly to discard our 9 in the hopes of getting the Ace of Spades.
The extra pay out we could expect from getting that Ace and completing the Royal Flush cannot justify the amount of guaranteed coins from our already made straight flush we would be throwing away. If you keep this idea of calculated risks and trying to maximize the strength of the hand that we get at the end of the game you will be well on your way to playing perfect video poker strategy. Of course, you won’t always make the right decision and sometimes you will lose because of it. But don’t let yourself become discouraged because the more you play the more you will learn and a better you will become.
Video Poker Strategy with overall return percentage of 99.5%. (Some machines over 100%.)
Here is a simple video poker strategy you can take advantage of which has an overall return percentage of around 99,5%. On some of the video poker machines, the overall return is actually over 100%. So, on these machines, on the long term play, you do have an edge over the online casinos.
The secret of this video poker strategy is to play only on video poker machines that have the highest combined payouts for the full house, and for the flush. All you need to do is to check out the pay tables on the video poker machines to see if you are with the right game or not.
Always Play The Max Bet:
You will receive 4000 coins if you hit a Royal Flush. Assuming you have played 5 coins, or, max bet, which will then pay 4000 coins for the 5 coins, or 800 coins per coin. If you want this strategy to work you should always play the maximum coins (max bet) so that you can get this added bonus.
If you play less then maximum coins you will receive a lot less for the Royal Flush. 3000 coins less to be precise. ‘Only’ 1000 coins, instead of 4000!
So, always do go for the max bet. If you do hit a Royal Flush and you weren’t playing max bet, you’ll miss that big bonus. The main thing to look for is the payoff for a full house and a flush. An online video poker machine like jacks or better machine should pay at least 40 coins for full house and 25 coins for a flush. Any less, do not play that video poker machine.
You will see that the Bonus video poker machines and Double Bonus video poker machines are also based on the Jacks or better game, but they also pay a higher amount for certain four of a kind hands then the standard Jacks or better machine.
How to play using the basic video poker playing strategy?
You can use the video poker strategy and chart on any of the machines you see above. No video poker chart is perfect, but the one you will see below is known to give you an overall return which will be a little bit better than 99%. A little luck on your side, and you will walk away a winner.
To use this video poker strategy chart, simply copy it to your computer, or keep this video poker strategy page open while you play video poker. Once you’re dealt your cards, look at your hand and compare it to what is given in the chart.
Let’s say you are dealt a low pair and four kings each of a different suit. Would you keep the pair, or would you keep the four kings? Or all? Check out the chart below, then make your move and win.
Basic Video Poker Strategy Play Chart:
Hand – Action
4 of a kind or higher: keep
4 card royal flush: draw 1
Full house or flush: keep
3 of a kind: draw 2
2 pair: draw 1
high pair (Jacks Aces): draw 3
3 card royal flush: draw 2
4 card flush: draw 1
low pair: draw 3
4 card straight (open ended): draw 1
3 card straight flush: draw 2
3 high cards: hold 2 suited or 2 connected
2 high cards: draw 3
1 high card: draw 4
None of the above: draw 5 new cards!!
You should of course realize that playing at over 100% payback does not give you a guarantee that you will win every time you play video poker with this strategy. This is because 2% of your overall return happens when you manage to hit the high paying royal flush.
It is a given fact that you can expect a video poker machine to give a royal flush once in every 40,000 hands. So, for the long term play you could expect to lose some money until you do hit the royal flush which will recoup any of your losses you made to that point. As mentioned, this is for the long term play strategy.
For the short term play strategy, luck does play a major part in how much you’ll win. Thing is, at least now you know that you are playing video poker with actual skill, and that you’re not just handing your money to the casino thanks to poor play or wrong machine choice.
